======================

The 2021-2023 World Test Championship began on August 4, 2021 and will end in June of 2023 when a single Test Match for the Championship will be played between the Top 2 finishers in the League Competition. League Standing points are determined by match outcomes. There are no bonuses for series wins. Many of these series are superimposed on the long standing traditional rivalries between the sides (Ashes, Wisden Trophy, Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Trans Tasman Trophy, etc.) Those longstanding rivalries are still important, in some cases more important to serious fans than the Test Championship League format, which was introduced for the the first time in 2019-21.

Win: 12 points; Tie: 6 points: Draw: 4 points; Loss: 0 points
Possible Points: 2 match series: 24; 3 match series: 36; 4 match series: 48: 5 match series 60.

Table is determined by Percentage of Possible Points earned in each match (also kept by series). This standardizes the table regardless of the length of the series and is a major change from the original format from 2019-21.  The change was implemented during the last cycle due to Pandemic restrictions that forced the cancellation of many series.

Team Schedules: Teams will play different amounts of matches. Teams will play 3 home and 3 away series v 6 different teams. Each team will not face 2 of the other teams in the League.

Ball by ball Commentary can be reached from many sources. The ones I use are
Cricinfo (attached to Fixtures) and Cricket Australia. I will be using Cricket Australia's BBBs for fielding analysis (run outs, dropped catches, run saves, mis-fields) as their commentaries use a controlled vocabulary for those variables, and always list fielders by name and position where the fielding variable happened. I will use Cricinfo BBBs for exact context of the variables, as they provide that more clearly than Cricket Australia, and for determination of "half chances".

Note: Fielding estimates due to dropped catches and run outs are just that: simple estimates based on runs per wicket difference. They do not take into account when the dropped catches or run outs happened. They also do not take into account who was dropped or run out. Trying to factor in those variables is beyond my ability, but hopefully, this simple accounting will lead to further research that could strengthen the validity of the estimates.

The Fielding Report: Source for all: Cricket Australia Ball by Ball commentaries. Cricinfo Ball by Ball commentaries. CA commentaries contain a controlled vocabulary. CI commentaries contain full over by over context and additional ball by ball commentary (used here for determination of  which dropped catches are "half chances").
This section will attempt to analyze the number of runs given up and saved by the fielding team. The variables used are:

For runs given up:

Dropped catches: for dropped catches, the context of each drop will be given and the personal run cost will be listed. Partnership context will be given for an estimate of the partnership cost. Number of extra wickets needed will be listed. Runs per wicket and runs per wicket + dropped catches will be given.

Missed Run Outs (only the runs on the balls delivered, I am assuming that a run out can never be assumed). The term used in the commentaries is "shy".

No balls (and the next ball bowled),

Wides (and the next ball bowled)

Byes (number and total runs conceded)

Mis-fields

For mis-fields, the fielders and positions, and delivery numbers are listed. The number of runs conceded is given, exactly if known, as a range if not.

Runs Saved

For runs saved: Saves. Runs saved will be given, exactly if known, as a range if not. Players,  positions, and delivery numbers will be given.

---

Number of Saves (runs or range of runs saved): 8, by 5 fielders; (known 1; unknown 7-26; total 8-26)

Note: positions seem to refer to the fielding position where the ball was saved , which was not necessarily the position where the fielder began the play. Thakur at 4.2 is an example of this.

Here is the CI commentary:

4.2 Bumrah to Crawley, 3 runs
Ooh. Big inswing, attacking the stumps and Crawley's big front-and-across plant. Plays slightly around that front pad, but clips it away neatly enough through midwicket

And here is the Cricket Australia Commentary.

4.2
Jasprit Bumrah to Zak Crawley. Seaming in length ball, outside off stump on the front foot working, to deep mid wicket for 3 runs, run save by Thakur, fielded by Pujara.

Which means, to someone who didn't see the play, that Crawley hit the ball to the mid wicket area, and Thakur, who was most likely still playing at mid on, chased the ball to the deep mid wicket boundary, either making a sliding or non-sliding stop and tap back to Cheteshwar Pujara, who returned the ball, keeping a certain boundary to 3 runs.

This is why I try to use multiple commentaries whenever necessary to decipher a play. And also how I figured out how CA names the positions where run saves are made.

3.6: Thakur  (mid-on) (1-4)
4.2: Thakur (deep mid-wicket) (1)
